Florence Nightingale

Florence was born in the 1820 in Italy. Her parents were very rich and they were land owners in England. Victorian women like Florence usually never went to school but her father believed that women should get an education and Florence liked to study a lot.

When Florence grew up she decided to do something useful with her life and at the age of 12 she started to visiting sick people to try to help them out.
As Florence became older she decided to move to Germany and learn about nursing. Her parents didn't want her to be a nurse because nurses were usually the working-class women. But that didn't stop her from doing what she wanted.

In 1854, Britain was in the Crimean War and Florence went to Crimea to help soldiers that had fought in battle. The hospital she worked on was very dirty and unhealthy but she cleaned up the hospital so it became safe to be there. Florence usually talked to the soldiers to give them hope and they got hope because just after a while number of dead people came down to 2% instead of 40% as it was before.

After the war Florence started a school for nurses. She believed that nurses should learn both from experience and training. Florence died when she was 90 years old in 1910.
